A widower and his daughter travel to the deep south of Thailand to seek the help of a Muslim doctor after releasing a djinn in a ruined house. The multicultural and religious approach to The Cursed Land is commendable and adds depth to its premise. As expected, Malaysian director and actor Bront Palarae gives a great performance, showcasing his talents in both Malay and Thai. However, despite his best efforts, even the excellent acting couldn’t completely save the film from its flaws. The narrative spends too much time documenting Mito’s personal decline, neglecting more important aspects of the story, such as community dynamics and historical context. Rich in cultural and religious interconnections, these elements are far more compelling than watching an adult slowly descend into madness. The showrunners missed an opportunity to really explore and develop the multicultural elements that were already there. Tightening up the narrative and focusing more on these fascinating cultural themes could have made the film much more impactful. The watch in its current form is decent, but it lacks potential.
